Pakistan’s Achievements in Olympic Men’s Hockey

The 1960 Olympic Gold medal had done wonders for Pakistan men’s hockey team and finally the world had witnessed the arrival of a new champion. Pakistan men’s hockey team followed it up with another victory and Gold medal at the 1968 Mexico Olympics. Pakistan had lost the 1964 Olympic Gold and the 1966 Asian Games Gold to India.
Pakistan Hockey Federation supported Atif by arranging a tour of Kenya as well as Uganda and also invited Japan to play in Pakistan. As the Pakistan men’s team participated in these international matches, they started gaining more confidence while Atif started his work of building a strong attacking team. Pakistan defeated Malaysia 4-0 and Kenya 2-1.
In the semi-final Pakistan was up against a strong West German team and ended up wasting 11 penalty corners. One of the most versatile hockey playing countries in the world, Pakistan has won the Gold medal in Olympics thrice starting from 1960. The 1960 Olympics hockey gold medal win is memorable because they defeated the winning streak of India. Before entering the 1960 Rome Olympic Games, Pakistan had already tasted victory in the 1958 Tokyo Asian Games where they got the gold medal defeating arch rivals India. The 1960 Olympic men’s hockey team had retained the same team barring a few players from the 1958 Tokyo Asian Games winning team. The 1960 Olympics Pakistan hockey team was led by Abdul Hameed Hameedi who was incidently the lone survivor from the 1948 London Olympics. It was a strong match and Pakistan started scoring only in the last 15 minutes.
