The Ice Hockey Equipment

Ice hockey requires special equipment. The ice hockey stick is slightly less curved than the routine hockey stick and may be made of wood or a high-tech composite material. Ice hockey players use special skates, which have blade grips to facilitate contact with the ice. Wearing safety gear is the law. Professional players may be excused from wearing mouth guards, but young players and collegiate-level players are obliged by law to wear them.

Ice hockey players should wear shoulder pads, shin and elbow guards and knee guards. Ice hockey gloves are more thickly padded than regular hockey gloves. New to Ice Hockey or thinking about starting? Hockey ice skates are the most important piece of equipment to get the best match for your feet and your wallet. If you have poor skates, you will struggle to skate well and you will fight the skates while you are on the ice. Next up is your first hockey stick. The list goes like this: shin guards, hockey jill or hockey jock, hockey pants, check guard, elbow pads, gloves and a helmet. Thinner is better on the skate socks.

Once again, this past winter season our family had lots of fun playing outdoors on our backyard ice rink. Last year, I added ice paint and team logos to our ice surface making it resemble like an NHL rink surface! The year before, I added extra lights to better illuminate the backyard ice skates rink.

There are many things to consider and many questions to answer if you want to successfully build your own rink.

What size will my rink be? Will I use a plastic rink liner to make ice? Will I build my rink myself?

Do I have a larger budget and someone else will build my ice rink? Will Mother Nature freeze the ice or will my rink be refrigerated?

Before you can begin to play ice hockey you need to be able to ice skate so that is where we are going to start

Ice hockey is more challenging to learn than most other team sports because you have to learn how to skate before you can learn how to play ice hockey. Learning how to ice skate well takes time and commitment. The fundamentals of ice skating include being able to skate forward and to stop in addition to turning in both directions.

There are classes tough that teach very beginners how to skate at almost every ice rink. Now we finally come to learning how to play hockey. The best thing you can do is to find an adult Learn-To-Play-Hockey class in your area. In addition to taking the Learn-To-Play class, get out and practice on the ice as often as you can. Playing ice hockey comes down to a couple of key skills to learn. Every teenager who plays ice hockey dreams of making it big in the National Hockey League. Professional and aspiring ice hockey players need a lot of energy to keep their bodies going during the 60 minutes of play. Focus and mental strength are extremely important in ice hockey.
