A Brief Look at Ice Hockey History

Ice hockey is one of the most beloved winter sports around the world, and it’s a national obsession in some countries, like Canada. The truth is, we really don’t know who invented ice hockey, or when it was actually invented. The word “hockey” could come from at least two sources. Field hockey and lacrosse were popular in Europe, and many people believe that British soldiers, stationed in Canada in the 1700s created a more modern form of ice hockey to combat boredom and the long, cold, Canadian winters.
Montreal may not lay claim to inventing the game, but they certainly can boast about hosting the very first indoor ice hockey game. Five Canadian students drafted these first seven rules, and so, in a sense, they did help “invent” the modern sport of ice hockey. The game of ice hockey can get fierce and dangerous because you can get checked across the ice and even get into a fight and the refs allow it. Ice hockey is unlike any other winter sport. Men and women play ice hockey along with teens and kids. Professional ice hockey is basically the most violent sport on the face of the earth. There will always be fights in hockey and there always have been fights in hockey.
The game is usually played in 3 periods each lasting 20 minutes long. If the teams are tied they do go into overtime just like any other game but first one to score wins.
