The new rules and the effect that these rules have had on the game have only made the true hockey fans less interested and made the game marketable to the general American sports fan.
The fact is, America loves scoring. Take soccer for instance, the most popular game worldwide. Imagine if the rules of soccer were changed for scoring to run rampant. In America, more scoring=more popularity. The rules of hockey were changed just to fix that problem. Nobody wants to watch 60 minutes of hockey with a 1-0 score. Only the true hockey fans would enjoy a game like that.
Hockey desperately needs a new marketing plan to save this game. Hockey needs a structural makeover. It’s important to note when discussing hockey trivia that hockey is actually the name for a whole group of sports. The game that most of us think of is properly called ice hockey, and is played on skates on ice using blade hockey skates, with five men to a side with a goalie. For example, game is extremely popular in Canada, Sweden, Finland, Russia, and the Czech Republic. The professional hockey league in North America is revealed by a hockey quiz to be known as the NHL, or the National Hockey League. Hockey has also been an Olympic sport since 1920, although it was interestingly enough first played at the summer Olympics rather than the winter. Since 1998, NHL players have been allowed to play as members of their home country’s Olympic teams.
